GRRA launches tree planting campaign to plant one million trees

Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Association (GRRA) has launched its new campaign to plant over one million trees in the city by 2030 as part of its efforts to fight climate change.

Established institutions as well as councillors and Member of Parliament such as Gweru City Council, have joined the initiative aimed at mitigating deforestation and habitat loss as well as its associated impacts.

The tree planting campaign was hosted by Salvation Army Church at Mkoba 14 under the theme “Giving Gweru A Greener Tomorrow” which saw both children and their parents participating in the event, much to everyone’s delight.

The trees were carefully selected based on heir usefulness, and ability to survive in this particular area and included, Mutowe, Mnii and Guava.

Salvation Army Church, Pastor Kudzai Marime said: “We are proud for GRRA to be playing a leading role in protecting the environment where we operate and giving back to the communities whom we work with. We stand strong in the battle against climate change and deforestation”.

Gweru Mayor Josiah Makombe said: “We thank GRRA for conducting such an initiative in the city. Our city and country at large will become a desert if we do not plant trees because we have so many challenges such as load shedding. They are making a difference and as GCC we are saying thank you, we cannot do this alone”.

GRRA Executive Director, Cornilia Selipiwe said: “This was the first event under the new campaign and a major success. Further events will be taking place in other places of the city during the rainy season. With teamwork, innovation and commitment a group of organisations in Gweru is taking courageous action to address some of the most pressing issues of our time.”
