Effective leadership is fundamental to local governance, as it involves attentively addressing citizens’ expectations, fostering community engagement, and promoting collaboration among residents.
Policymakers, council management, and ward leaders play pivotal roles in ensuring that local authorities deliver essential public services and implement policies crucial to achieving sustainable development goals.
In line with this, Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Association (GRRA) recently organized a leadership training workshop at the YWCA Hall. The workshop brought together councillors and ward leaders to enhance their leadership skills under the guidance of expert Charles Nyamapanzi.
Councillor Catherine Mhondiwa of Ward 13 highlighted the workshop’s significance in unlocking leaders’ potential to build robust institutions. She emphasized that civic engagement is vital for advancing democratic societies and fostering a sense of ownership among residents.
“We have learned a lot on how to lead people in our respective communities. This unlocks the potential that has been locked inside leaders. It is important for such traits from leaders to be shown in their communities so that it fosters development in communities,” she stated.
Councillor Mhondiwa also noted that humility is essential for leaders working alongside residents to improve service delivery. “As a leader, I have learnt that you must set goals and objectives. You must be humble with the ability to work with your community,” she added.
Similarly, Councillor Jefita Zvidzai of Ward 12 expressed appreciation for GRRA’s efforts in enhancing councillors’ skills to formulate effective policies. He underscored the importance of citizen engagement in building strong communities. “We thank GRRA for enhancing councillors’ skills in relation to their communities. As a leader, I have learned that people need to be engaged to promote democracy,” he remarked.
The GRRA’s initiative reflects its commitment to fostering accountable and responsive leadership within Gweru’s local governance structures. By equipping leaders with the necessary skills and knowledge, such workshops aim to strengthen community participation and enhance service delivery across the city.
