Curbing Crime Through Advocacy: Northlea’s Journey to Safety

In the heart of Northlea, a suburb in Gweru’s Ward 1, the community’s resolve to tackle crime has brought hope and unity.

What began as a response to increasing social issues—such as theft, murder, and gender-based violence—has transformed into a testament to the power of advocacy and grassroots action.

For years, Northlea residents struggled with a lack of security infrastructure.

The nearest police station was a daunting six-kilometer walk, leaving the neighborhood vulnerable to criminal activity. Resident Elizabeth Marimirofa recalls her fears vividly:

“Our neighborhood was full of thieves and murderers. Burglary became the norm, and no one seemed to care. I even considered relocating as I felt unsafe in my own home.”

The situation forced residents to take action. “I joined a neighborhood committee to find solutions to our troubles,” said Marimirofa, who, along with other residents, approached Gweru City Council in 2018 to request land for a local police station.

However, the council was unresponsive, leaving the community in limbo.

The Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Association (GRRA) recognized the urgent need for intervention through its ward-based meetings in Northlea.

Understanding the residents’ plight, GRRA wrote to the Mayor and Acting Town Clerk, requesting a meeting to discuss the land allocation issue.

The advocacy efforts paid off. Within two weeks of GRRA’s engagement with the council, 200 square meters of land were allocated for the police station.

This marked a significant milestone for the community, as residents now had a designated site for security infrastructure.

While awaiting the construction of a permanent police station, Northlea residents came together to purchase a cabin to serve as a temporary police post.

For Marimirofa, this was a moment of triumph: “I am just so grateful for what GRRA has done for us. The cabin we bought can now be used by the police while the permanent structure is being processed. We feel safer already.”

The success in Northlea is a story of resilience and collaboration. GRRA’s efforts to bridge the gap between residents and local authorities have not only empowered the community but also brought tangible results.

Marimirofa praises the efforts of community members like their Chairperson, Mr. Mukarati, whose persistence and advocacy were instrumental: “Thanks to the triggering of community members like Mukarati, we are now close to achieving a crime-free status.”

This initiative underscores the power of local advocacy to address systemic challenges. By securing a police presence, Northlea has taken a significant step toward restoring safety, unity, and hope for its residents.

Through community-driven efforts and partnerships with organizations like GRRA, neighborhoods like Northlea are proving that lasting change begins with grassroots action.
